Gemvara, shiny pretty things, and being a grownup

If you’ve been out of the loop (read: not on Twitter/Facebook) lately, you might have missed a very important announcement:

I GOT A JOB!!!

It’s a big deal. And I guess I can say now that I’m a big deal too :) Two months out of college and landing a job in another state… not too shabby, eh? Here’s the deets: I’m working for Gemvara, which is a custom jewelry startup.  I’m their Social Media Coordinator, which basically means I handle Twitter, Facebook, and various other online marketing efforts (talking to bloggers, etc. etc.) It’s located in Lexington, which is a schlep from where I am because it’s past the end of the T’s red line… which means taking a shuttle to/from the T every day.

You know you work at a startup when…

  • there’s a basketball hoop in the middle of the office
  • the office fridge is stocked with beer and Diet Coke (thanks, Highland Capital!)
  • wall decor ranges from life-sized basketball player cutouts to company mission statements to signs threatening to off kittens if quotas aren’t met (kidding, people!)
  • on your first day, the founder walks in wearing this:
Matt Lauzon, Founder of Gemvara

Seriously, this is the head honcho...

Because I’m working there, and because they’re awesome, you should check it out.  They have great and prettyyyy jewelry — which I’m lucky enough to get to wear to BlogHer this weekend, pics to come — and the customization options are really cool- you get to see the rendering of your piece in 3D color, not just some b/w jeweler’s sketch. Plus, if you decide that there’s something you like, I might be able to hook you up with a discount… and your purchase would go towards paying my paycheck!  If you get the urge to buy me something from the website, here’s one of my all-time favorites (so far)-

diamond ring

Someday, my prince will come (and buy me this!)

… just in case you were wondering. Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?

This grown-up thing is hard…

but I love it. I miss California with all of my heart, but being on my own is pretty amazing. Like really, really amazing (despite the bill paying and the dr’s appointments and taking care of my cat/baby lol). BlogHer is almost here, I’m running a swap out of our hotel room and doing awesome Gemvara giveaways, so it will be insane and exhausting, but hopefully amazing, awe-inspiring, and educational too… not to mention fun! Anyways, because being a grownup is so hard, I’m going to bed (before 11, a minor miracle). Will be updating from BlogHer, though, so keep a lookout!

Leave me some love to check out while I’m in NYC, will ya? It’ll help me feel less alone at a conference of 2500 women, none of whom I’ve ever met before!

BlogHer, here we come!

In just a couple short (and jam-packed) weeks, my awesome bosslady/partner-in-crime from Shoestring and I will be headed to NYC for my very first conference.  Lucky for me, it also happens to be the epic annual BlogHer conference, where thousands of women bloggers unite to talk all things bloggy.  Here’s what I’m excited for:

  1. NEW YORK CITY!- not much needs to be said about that. It’s been since 6+ years since I was there…oh, how I miss that city.
  2. Networking- with over 2000 lady bloggers (and a few guys too), BlogHer is a crazy opportunity for anyone interested in blogging and social media
  3. Learning- there are so many sessions to choose from, it will be so hard to decide! Definitely want to hit the one on designing my own WordPress theme, though! I’m also crazy lucky to be going with Melissa, serial entrepreneur and the brains — and beauty– behind Shoestring. Not only does she rock, she’s also a great mentor and well-connected, which will make the entire experience even more beneficial.
  4. Blogging- since that’s the whole idea of BlogHer (who woulda thunk?), I hope that will push me to do more exciting and thought-provoking blogging, both that weekend and in the future.
  5. Brand interaction- alright, that makes me sound like a sellout. But really, it’ll be interesting at the very least to interact with representatives from brands, both big and small, that I use/buy on a regular basis. And I’ll be honest, I’m totally ok with getting free swag, especially now that I won’t have Caltopia to replenish my pen supply this semester!
  6. Extreme Social Media- I have the feeling that this weekend will be chock-full of Tweets, FB posts, blog posts, etc. etc. etc… and I couldn’t be happier. Nerdy as it may be, I really am a digital native and there will be lots of learning going on in the rest of the social media sphere this weekend too!

Other happenings coming up include our Worchester Clothes Swap on 7/31 (Nightline will be there!), starting contract work for my fried pickle friend Sonja at The Cultivated Word, and, as always, startup networking events.

What are you excited for this week? Fun projects at work? Relaxing with family? Getting through to next weekend?

Article aggregation!

Big word, huh? Basically, just giving all my awesometastic loyal readers (hi, mom, dad, and jillian!) linkage to all of my external posts from the last week or two. I know, you were just dying to read more snark from me.

Schadenfreude in Social Media?

A walk down (academic) memory lane…

My “things I learned in college” post got me to thinking about all of the academic things I’ve learned in college… which got me to thinking about all of the papers I’ve written. Since I started taking English classes first semester freshman year, I’ve been writing lots of papers every year. When my MacBook bit the dust, I lost some of them, but here’s an attempt to remember them. Enjoy the ridiculousness of my academic career!

  • Anti-semitism in Merchant of Venice (This was either my first or second college paper, for Shakespeare. It was awful.)
  • Metaphorical significance of gold in McTeague
  • Imagery and Dichotomy in Paradise Lost (My first A paper in college!)
  • Significance of Grice’s Maxims in Alice in Wonderland
  • Consonance and Assonance in John Donne’s “The Flea”
  • “Disillusionment in ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’”
  • “The Debate over California’s MGM Plan” (term paper for American Studies 10)
  • “Burgeoning Cities and Growing Feminism: Women in Literature”
  • “Procession and Contrasts: Milton’s Flower Catalogue in Lycidas
  • “Microcosms of the City in Venus in Boston and The Quaker City
  • Wasting time in The Screwtape Letters
  • Significance of Plants in The Duchess of Malfi
  • Interplay of Images and Language in Shel Silverstein’s poetry
  • “Connect and Disconnect: The Active Roles of Inheritance and Disinheritance in The Crying of Lot 49
  • Sensationalism and Racism in Reports of the Richmond High Gang Rape (this was REALLY depressing to research and write)
  • “Sight and Similes: Allegories, Imagery, Winged Creatures and Christ in the Climax of Milton’s Samson Agonistes”
  • Conversion of Male-Female Relationships to Fraternal Relationships in LOTR
  • Work in Progress 1- Significance of “Excitement” and rhetoric in Charles G. Finney’s Sermons/Writing
  • WIP 2- THESIS- Schadenfreude as the overarching popularizing element in RTV and social media

Looking back, this list (albeit incomplete) looks pretty impressive, if I do say so myself. It’s nice to be able to look back on all of the physical products of my hard work here at Cal, and see all of the ideas, no matter how out there, that I’ve come up with and managed to turn into papers!
